Demystifying witchcraft: between traditions and culture
Since the dawn of time, civilizations are rooted in spiritual and mystical beliefs, which are often transmitted from one generation to the next. While religion is one of the key elements of this phenomenon, today, we’re diving a little deeper into the mystical realm of things. In this article, we’ll be exploring the intricacies of magic, witchcraft and wizardry. We’ll try and cover both their spiritual aspect, and their use in popular culture. At the end of this article, we will introduce a brand new experience on our platform, which uses crystals as a way to get into witchcraft.
Witchcraft in spiritual contexts
As it is a practice varying greatly according to cultures and societies, witchcraft can be difficult to define. From African tribes to South American communities, witchcraft has made its way into most traditional cultures worldwide.
Practicing magical spells is usually tied with the notion of good and evil. Within the different traditions of witchcraft, we often associate spells with either healing or threatening forces. Traditionally, witches are usually defined as “those who use supernatural means to cause harm to the innocents”. However, in some indigenous communities, we can find spiritual tribe members using powers similar to witchcraft for healing purposes. We call them shamans. There is thus a moral contrast between those two uses of magic.
Today, people still consider witchcraft as a means to explain or even to trigger supernatural phenomenons. The tradition of magical rituals, either within religious groups or individuals, still continues. People are trying to use spells to influence their fate. Some even go as far as using black magic as retaliation to others who hurt them. This is considered pretty risky, so a great deal of precaution is obviously needed.
Magic in art and popular culture
With such a mystical appeal, it is no wonder that magic and witchcraft are great sources of inspiration to storytellers.
Whether it’s in books, Renaissance paintings or popular movie sagas, magic and witchcraft are amazing tools to create intricate fictional universes. If you’re a Harry Potter fan like me, you’ll admit how much creativity we can develop from allowing such supernatural elements to be the ground for fantastic stories.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter if you believe in actual witchcraft in the real world. It is simply interesting to see how spiritual traditions have transcended the ages to still be able to transport people into new experiences.
