The importance of creating memories
We all noticed it during the pandemic: time goes by fast and each moment of freedom and enjoyment should be cherished. Since we are born, we go through different stages in our life and experience different moments, who then become memories. If you’ve read our previous article about emotional intelligence, you’ll appreciate the parallel with the Pixar film Inside Out. Once Riley’s experiences are lived, they are archived as memories inside her head under the form of coloured orbs. Today, we’re focusing on those memories. We’ll see how important memorable experiences are, as well as how to crystallize them to make them stay with us. As usual, we’ll introduce a new experience on our platform related to today’s topic, so make sure you read till the end!
Going through memorable life experiences
It might sound simple said that way, but it’s actually a bit more complex than it seems. It is incredibly important to live things actively and not just stare at our own existence. Experiences, whether positive or negative, are what shapes us and determine the way we react to future situations.
For this reason, spending valuable time with friends and family is absolutely essential to the creation of a network of memories. Whether it is through family dinners, holidays with friends, or difficult times, collective memorable moments truly construct our identity. The memories that we create from these moments will stay with us on the relatively long-term, depending on how much they impacted us. Reminiscing these life moments will guide us towards making informed decisions, but can also make us relive these memories through nostalgia. This feeling of sentimentality for the past can truly be powerful and is part of what makes us human. By taking a step back and reflecting upon these memories, we can better appreciate both the present and the future.
Crystallizing our memories
There’s a few things that can help make memories seem more real to the person looking at them. Using our creativity to transform those abstract memories into physical objects could truly emphasize this process.
An obvious example is taking pictures and videos, allowing us to contemplate a memory from a very specific moment again and again. Although very visual, there are other, slightly more complex ways allowing us to recall special moments. Those capitalize upon the sentimental value of memories. They include drawings, written pieces, customized objects, and all sorts of things. Because they require personal input, they allow for a more intimate reconstruction of the memory, triggering a more intense feeling of nostalgia. They are the ultimate vehicles to crystallize our memories and make them appear as real as possible.
